Giant Honey Bee facts:
The Scientific Name of the Giant Honey Bee is Apis Dorsata and their colour is quite similar to the European honey bee, with golden, black and pale bands on the abdomen and with a hairy thorax. They are herbivores and live from nectar and pollen. Bees play a crucial role in the world’s ecosystem. In fact, the honey bee is the world’s most important single species of pollinator, ensuring people and animals have the food they need to survive. If there were no honey bees, we wouldn’t have fruits and vegetables like apples, broccoli and cucumbers.
Despite having such an important job, the honey bee has quite a short life span which depends on whether it is a drone bee, a worker bee or a queen bee. The lifespan of a honey bee depends on the type of bee it is. Drone bees (male bees hatched from unfertilised eggs) live for around eight weeks. Sterile worker bees tend to live for up to six weeks during summer and five months or more during winter. However, the queen bee, the only fertile bee in the colony, can live for several years. They are huge compared to the normal sized Honey Bee! Their size is 17 to 20 mm.
