Sabre facts:
The sabre is a real ancient giant. It’s scientific name is Smilodon. The Sabre is an extinct animal. Imagine you standing on the planet in North an South America 12.000 years ago at the end of the Pleistocene…..The Sabre is a giant animal, from 2 to 2,5 meters long with a weight of 300 kilo! Sabres are carnivores and mostly eat deers, bisons and wooly mammoths. Previous studies of fossils suggests that it became extinct mainly due to lack of food which was caused by the climate change. Climate change caused plants extinction which resulted in extinction of herbivores (animals that eat plants) and ultimately it caused Sabre extinction as there were no more herbivores to hunt for food.
The teeth of the Sabre could grow up to 20 cm each, so they can tear their prey apart. The jaw can open up to an angle of 90 degrees in order to use the long teeth for hunting purposes. This gape is much larger than the modern cats.
