Grizzly facts:
The Grizzly has a bit of a scary Scientific name; Ursus arctos horribilis. The part of the name horriblis actually refers to horrible. But if you do not encounter a grizzly bear with youngsters or you have a surprise encounter, they are not that horrible.
The grizzly is an omnivore, a top-of-the-food-chain predator, yet much of their diet consists of nuts, berries, fruit, leaves, and roots. The grizzly bear is a North American subspecies of the brown bear. These awe-inspiring giants tend to be solitary animals—with the exception of females and their cubs—but at times they do congregate. Gatherings of grizzly bears can be seen at prime Alaskan fishing spots when the salmon run upstream for summer spawning. In this season, dozens of bears may gather to feast on the fish, craving fats that will sustain them through the long winter ahead.
The grizzly bear is a real giant in size and weight. Their claws are about 4 inches long and they can become 5 to 8 feet and 800 pounds. Not particularly a little teddy bear 🙂
