Hippo facts:

The scientific name of a Hippo is Hippopotamus amphibius. Hippos are large semi-aquatic mammals, which means the live both on land and in water. They have large barrel-shaped body, short legs, a short tail and an enormous head! Hippos have greyish to muddy-brown skin, which fades to a pale pink colour underneath. They are considered the second largest land animal on Earth. Males can grow up to 3.5m long and 1.5m tall, and can weigh up 3,200kg.

To stay cool in the blistering sun, hippos spend most of their day cooling off in rivers and lakes. Despite their enormous size, hippos are great swimmers and can hold their breath for up to five minutes underwater. When completely submerged, their ears and nostrils fold shut to keep water out. In the wild hippos live for around 40 years. In captivity, they tend to live longer and may reach up to 50 years old.

It’s a big guy this hippo, even on your wall, but not as dangerous as in real life. Although it looks a lot like a big pig, the hippo diverged from aquatic mammals like whales and dolphins many million years ago. This grazer feels best with enough water around to keep cool but it will also look really great on your wall. In about 4 hours you can make your own cool and unique hippo.
