Lobsters are closely related to crabs and shrimps. Lobsters have long bodies with muscular tails, and live in crevices or burrows on the sea floor. Three of their five pairs of legs have claws, including the first pair, which are usually much larger than the others. Lobsters are best known as a delicacy, but they are also beautiful animals. Lobsters are shy and prefer to hide to avoid daylight. At night they go out to collect food and can smell very well where bait is located. They mainly navigate with their nose and antennae because they see very little in the dark. Lobsters are also known for their cannibalism and are constantly arguing and battling over females & food.
The Scientific Name is Homarus. They are omnivores which means that they eat plants as well as meat like fish. Their average life span when they live in the wild can become more than 50 years! They can become up to 3.25 feet long. The largest lobster ever encountered was 44.4 pounds and was almost 4 feet long.
